What Does USDA Organic Mean?
Everything you need to know about organic certification and what it means for your family’s food.
We’ve all seen and heard the claim “organic,” but what exactly does it mean on a label? Here’s a look at what you can expect to find in food products labelled “organic” -- including some of your favorites from Unilever like some Hellmann’s® Mayonnaise flavors and two of our tasty spreads.
What’s Under The Label
Any food labelled “organic” must be certified by the United States Department of Agriculture, or one of their authorized agents, to make sure it meets strict requirements. There are different levels under that label, but all relate to the same definition of “organic”: no antibiotics, growth hormones, synthetic fertilizers (though certain USDA approved pest controls can be used) and no genetically modified organisms or GMOs.
Here’s the different organic labels you may see:
100% Organic: Made completely with organic ingredients.
Organic: Made with at least 95% organic ingredients.
Made With Organic Ingredients: Made with a minimum of 70% organic ingredients.
